Attending #SXSL Representing Change Catalyst & Tech Inclusion At The White House

President Obama Will host South By South Lawn (#SXSL): A White House Festival of Idea, Art, and Action Monday October 3, 2016

I’ve been attending and speaking at SXSW in Austin,TX for seven out of the past eight years. The 2016 SXSW was special. Both President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama attended and spoke on panels and a fireside chat. I had the opportunity to see the President Obama fireside chat in person during the SXSW this year.

When the White House announced the South By South Lawn (SXSL) festival on Twitter, I immediately shared it and was dreaming I would [...]

How Not To Get Sick Before, During and After SXSW aka How Not To Get SXSW Sars

Let's face it, no one likes to get sick, especially when traveling and attending conferences. One of the largest tech conferences in the world is SXSW Interactive which attracts thousands of geeks, nerds, developers, etc to Austin each year to learn, network and of course to party. Last year (2014) SXSW Interactive attracted over 32,000 thousands people from 82 foreign countries. With that many people, networking, shaking hands, exchanging business cards, in and out of bathrooms and more, unfortunately there's plenty of germs in the air. This is what many SXSW veterans call SXSW Sars.

A Talk on Why Black Leaders Matter In Tech At SXSW Interactive 2015

SXSW Interactive 2015 will be held from March 13-17th and I'm excited to speaking on the topic "Why Black Leaders Matter in Technology". This will be my seventh time speaking at SXSW in the last eight years. The session will be held on Saturday, March 14th at 9:30am. Yes, that means don't party to hard on Friday night.

If the title looks familiar, that's because the talk is inspired from my USA Today article I wrote with the same title, "Wayne Sutton: Why black leaders matter in technology".

Below is the full session description:

Can ESSENCE Festival be the SXSW for African- Americans?

This was my first year attending ESSENCE Music Festival. The event is targeted primary to African- Americans women and this year had record attendance reaching 550,000 attendees. ESSENCE is a true mix of music, entrepreneurial workshops, trade shows, film/tv screenings and panels. The only big piece missing from ESSENCE is more technology. This year ESSENCE held it's first "tech village" in partnership with YESWECODE. IMHO it was a great start but was very underserved every time I walked over. Regardless ESSENCE reminded me of another conference that has little diversity, at least in the [...]
