New Skype video to promote making Skype Video calls on the iPhone. Now what T-Mobile?

Last night Skype finally announced the capability to make video calls using the iPhone. The new version of Skype for the iPhone supports video calls on the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and iPod touch 4th generation with i0S 4.0 or above. It was rumored that Skype was going to announce Skype video calls for the iPhone at CES after a leaked document but I guess Skype wanted to give everyone a New Years gift being that New Years Day is one of Skype’s most active days of the year.
To help promote the new version of Skype for the iPhone, Skype launched a new promotional video/commercial. I’m not sure who has the worst product promo video Skype or Google’s Nexus S. You can watch the Skype for iPhone video below.
The song used in the Skype commercial is called “Those Dancing Days” by the band Those Dancing Days. I get the video but whoa. Is Skype trying to start a viral Skype video movement or just have people look crazy while making Skype calls. I’m sure some agency had a meeting saying this video will go viral on YouTube! Personally, I would have made a video showing more realistic, practical, business and family examples of making Skype video calls versus a video of former college buddies dancing around in random places. I will confess, I did think about tweeting that if someone calls me in the next hour I’ll be dancing on Skype to “Those Dancing Days”.
Regardless of the video, Skype in one night solved a problem for Apple and AT&T that T-Mobile was attacking in one of their recent FaceTime/AT&T/iPhone attack commercials. The ability to make video calls without wifi using the iPhone and connecting multiple devices. You can see the T-Mobile commercial below.
Now what T-Mobile?
Note, there are other iPhone Video Call apps such as, Fring and Tango that you can use to make video calls not only from iPhone to iPhone but from iPhone to other mobile phone such as the HTC EVO. I’m expecting QIK to launch a this feature soon as well.
Did Skype just conquer the mobile video calling space? What application do you use to make mobile video calls?

Is Google trying to sell a phone or cuff jeans and hipster swagger with the Nexus S commercial video?
I’m sure you have heard by now that Google has announced the Google Nexus S mobile phone. The Nexus S is Google’s upgrade from the Nexus 1 and they’re marketing the phone as “Pure Google”. To help promote the Nexus S phone Google just posted a new commercial / Ad on Youtube. You can watch it below.
In comparison, watch Apple’s latest iPhone 4 Longer commercial. Just like Apple’s iPad commercials they are simple to the point and shows features that matter.
While looking at the Google Nexus S phone commercial I’m trying to relate the phone features, to the various colors of cuff jean (are those jams too) along with various actions the person is doing while holding the Nexus S phone. Google which is known for it’s simple search bar, should keep it simple when it comes to mobile phone videos IMHO.
A few weeks ago I was having a debate about what is a hipster, should I wear cuff jeans or not using instagram and twitter for feedback. After watching the Nexus S video I’m not sure if I want to touch a Nexus S because it’s looks like I’m not hipster enough to own one. But I don’t think Google is trying to sell the phone to my demographic anyway… #justsayin
I will say, the website for the Nexus S is clean and simple. Good job Google.

Samsung Galaxy Tab unboxing video makes my iPad sad. #galaxytab
Last week I was mailed a Samsung Galaxy Tab via @samsungmobileus to test and review mainly because of a tweet sent by @HarrietCammock asking would I recommend the Samsung Galaxy Tab.
@marioarmstrong @chipperd @BrothaTech @urbanreporter @waynesutton @SoldierKnowBest Would u recommend te Galaxy Tab frm Samsung
My response at that time was from what I read about the Samsung Galaxy Tab it seems like a great device but I don’t think nothing can compete with the iPad do to the usability and the apps. Now after using the Samsung Galaxy Tab for a few days my opinion has changed. The Galaxy Tab being at 7 inches running Andriod 2.2 is a great device for reading, browsing the web, checking email and being productive on the go. In terms of the applications, it’s comes down to what is available on Apple’s iTunes app store vs Google’s growing Android Market place. There’s also the data coverage options and cost but I will leave that up to you and will stick to comparing the device.
I’m still getting use to the Samsung Galaxy Tab and will post more reviews about it over the next two weeks before I have to return the device to Samsung. In the mean time, here’s my Samsung Galaxy Tab unboxing video that makes my iPad sad.
Do you own a Samsung Galaxy Tab or another Android powered tablet? If so what are your favorite apps? Also if you have any questions about the Galaxy Tab let me know in the comments.

Video: What’s on Oprah’s favorite things 2010 list? The iPad. This is better than any iPad app commercial
First Twitter had it’s Oprah moment, then Mark Zuckerberg made an appearance on the show and today, no it wasn’t Steve Jobs but the iPad. During the Oprah show today, the queen of all media announcing her favorite things 2010 list dropped down a floating iPad with what looked like either Victoria Secret wings or Angle wings, either way the iPad had wings! Before Oprah even announced that everyone in attendance was receiving a free iPad the crowd was going crazy! Steve Jobs couldn’t make a better iPad commercial if Apple tried. Take a look!
Oprah also stated how she plays her favorite game on the iPad, which is Scrabble and you can now read the O magazine on the iPad as well.
What do you think? Is this the best iPad commercial of all time that’s really not an iPad commercial?

Video: Real talk about influence, creativity and what it means to be an influencer
Hat tip to Dave McClure who ironically I’m influenced by for posting the short documentary video called INFLUENCERS on his blog.
The INFLUENCERS video is 13:56 long but it’s worth viewing. Grab a cup of coffee and enjoy.
INFLUENCERS is a short documentary that explores what it means to be an influencer and how trends and creativity become contagious today in music, fashion and entertainment.
The film attempts to understand the essence of influence, what makes a person influential without taking a statistical or metric approach.
Written and Directed by Paul Rojanathara and Davis Johnson, the film is a Polaroid snapshot of New York influential creatives (advertising, design, fashion and entertainment) who are shaping today’s pop culture.
“Influencers” belongs to the new generation of short films, webdocs, which combine the documentary style and the online experience.

I’m almost at the point to where I hate the words “influence” or “influencer” but after watching this video, I’m cool with it again just as long as we don’t see anymore find the “influencers” projects in the near future.
A few takeaways I got from the video was:
- If you’re a startup or have a product you have to decide if you want to stay small and cool or go big and be liked by a lot of people
- Looking at trends how brands embrace cultures
- The concept of how brands are trying to reaching “influencers” online is out of control
- Become a mentor
What are some of your takeaways from the video?
