Comic – A simple lesson about location-based applications and privacy from Batman and Robin.
This is too funny especially if you’re a location-based services fan and love a good comic. Batman tells Robin to stop checking into the Batcave on FourWhere. Ironically Fourwhere is an actual product made by the guys at Sysomos.
Tip: GreggVM
Although the comic is funny, it is a simple reminder about privacy using location-based applications to check-in such as Foursquare, TriOut, Whrrl, Gowalla, loopt and the many others. Basically don’t check-in at your home base or other places where you don’t want people to find you or a secret place. I think this may be my new meme when speaking about location-based apps and privacy, “Don’t check-in at the Batcave!”
Do you check-in at home using location-based applications?

The @Sysomos results are in from the #Duke vs #UNC Social Media Challenge
Yesterday was the big game between Duke and UNC and I’m sure you know by now that Duke won the game and I lost a Twitter bet. Just take a look at my Twitter background to see ugly Duke icons everywhere. It’s a sad day as a UNC fan but lets see how well did UNC fans do in the “Social Media Challenge”. The challenge was basically to see which team had more conversions on Twitter and other social web outlets. To measure the results I reached out to Scout Labs, and Sysomos to provide the data. Also Crimson Hexagon sent me an email about helping out too. So not only are we looking at a Duke vs. UNC social web report but a comparison of social media analytics platforms. Sysomos provides customers with the tools to measure, monitor, understand and engage with the social media landscape. http://sysomos.com
Here are the results:
A Sysomos comparison of activity using the query terms: “Tar Heels” AND (“UNC” OR “NC” OR “North Carolina”) and “Duke” AND (“Blue Devils” OR “Devils”).

A Sysomos comparison of activity using the query terms: “#duke OR (duke AND vs) OR (duke AND unc) OR (duke AND (fan OR fans))
OR (duke AND game) “#unc OR (unc AND vs) OR (duke AND unc) OR (unc AND (fan OR fans)) OR (unc AND game) ”

There were 26,947 tweets that used #duke, and 14,982 tweets that used #unc.
For overall social media sentiment:
For: “Tar Heels” AND (“UNC” OR “NC” OR “North Carolina”) was 18% positive, 25% neutral and 57% negative.
For “Duke” AND (“blue devils” OR “devils”), it was 11% positive, 23% negative and 66% negative.
So it looks like UNC lost the Social Media Challenge from Sysomos too but more negative reactions around Duke.
Are Duke fans more negative than UNC fans?

How you can take part in the Duke vs. UNC Social Media Challenge and the Sysomos & Scout Labs reports
Today is one of the most talked about games of the year in men’s college basketball. It’s the rivalry between Duke and the University of North Carolina. For those who follow me across the social web know that I’m a big UNC fan and even though UNC is having a rough season this year, I still believe they can beat Duke tonight. I believe so much that made a Twitter background bet with Duke fan, fellow NC resident and president of Ignite Social Media, Jim Tobin. The bet is if and when UNC beat Duke tonight, Jim has to change his Twitter background to custom UNC themed background for one week. If Duke gets lucky enough to win, I’ll have to change my Twitter background to a Duke themed background.

Hat tip to @JeffreyLCohen for idea.
The Social Media Challenge and Sysomos
While thinking about the idea further I reached out to a few social media analytics platforms to see if they were willing to monitor the conversations around the Duke vs UNC game tonight. Sysomos which provides customers with the tools to measure, monitor, understand and engage with the social media landscape has agreed to monitor the conversations online before and after the game. So, how can you participate? Easily, if you’re a Duke fan just tweet using the hashtag #Duke and a if you’re a UNC fan just use the hashtag #UNC. A few things we’re going to look at tonight is the amount of conversations around each team, conversations location and sentiment level.
It will be interesting to see which team brand will have the most conversations posted tonight and how will the conversations change do to the outcome of the game. Basically how will Duke fans react when UNC wins tonight. (Sorry I just had to say it.)
On a personal note. my wife @LaToyamSutton, a Duke fan wrote a blog post about what its like in the Sutton house when it’s game time. You can read it here: I love my husband but …
Sysomos will post the social media analytics results a few days after the game and I’ll blog about it here too.
A big thanks to Sysomos for helping out and good luck to both teams and their fans. Go Heels!
UPDATE:
Scout Labs has agreed to use their platform to monitor the #Duke vs. #UNC conversations online before and after the game tonight too.

Scout Labs is a powerful, web-based application that finds signals in the noise of social media to help teams build better products and stronger customer relationships.
Also you can already see some of the smack talking on twitter.
