14 Social Media Professionals to watch in 2010 from the Triangle, NC

If there’s two things most of my friends and colleagues know about me is that I love living in the Triangle, NC area which includes Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill and that I love technology/gadgets/social media. This area has one of the largest and smartest technology communities in the world and more than often I think is over looked by others.
A few weeks ago I saw a tweet from someone asking about what cities have strong social media communities and they were listing New York, Austin, Miami and the “Valley” which are worthy but don’t forget about the Triangle area too. With more companies starting to implement social media strategies into their marketing efforts or use social media for customer service we have seen an impact from various companies in the area either from creating new positions or launching new products or using social media for community outreach.
Below is a list of social media professionals in the Triangle Area who I believe are ones to watch in 2010.

19 reasons why the Triangle is better than Silicon Valley my #IgniteRaleigh presentation
So last night was the big night, the first ever Ignite event was held in Raleigh, NC called Ignite Raleigh. Myself along with Jeff Cohen, Kipp Bodnar, Ryan Boyles aka team OurHashTag organized the event but we had a lot of help from Zach Ward of DSI Comedy and volunteers. I was extremely nervous to give my talk but was very excited about the event as I have watch the success of other Ignites take place across the world such as New York, Portland and Boulder, CO. Speaking of Boulder I must thank Andrew Hyde who provided me with a lot advice on how to plan an Ignite event. Also thanks to Brady who started Ignite.
Below is the video and my slides from my Ignite Raleigh presentation on 19 reasons why the Triangle is better than Silicon Valley. Let me know what you think, as I’m sure some Silcon Valley residents are sure to respond or retaliate.
A big thanks to @GinnySkal for recording and posting the video on 30THREADS.com. Other Ignite Raleigh presenter videos will be posted on http://igniteraleigh.com website.

My 1st World Wide Photo Walk in Raleigh, NC & favorite photos

Today I participated in my first photo walk on the campus of N.C. State University. The photo walk was apart of Scott Kelby”s Worldwide photo walk event that is organized by volunteers across the world today. Apparently there were two Raleigh photo walks groups but I was apart of the one led by Ashley Sue Allen @AshleySue.
Other attendees met at the NCSU bell tower around 9:45 A.M. and after brief introductions we basically walked around campus and took a lot of photos from 10:00 A.M. to noon. I had been on the campus before for various events in the past but due to a recent storm some of the trees were blown down or split open which made for an interesting scene and rare photos. Some of my favorite photos from today were taken under one of the campus bridges and of the expression tunnel.
I want to say thanks to Ashley for organizing the event and Scott Kelby for creating the Worldwide photo walk idea.
What is your favorite picture?

Friday Fix: Social Media brings me home. Thanks to @TyDowning
If you have been following my Brightkite updates and tweets over the past 48 hrs then you know that I was in Wilmington, NC on Thursday for a talk on Social Media. I was asked to do the talk by Ty Downing of SayitSocial, someone who I’ve only known virtually via twitter and now someone who I call a friend. I was excited about doing the talk for a few reasons, one being that Wilmington is kind of like a second home for me as I’m originally from Teachey, NC which is only 30 to 40 minutes away from Wilmington. As a youth I would make the drive down to Wilmington to hang out and as I told Ty that my prom was in Wilmington. Therefore I was humbled and nervous about the presentation as my audince would be a room of savvy SEO experts, bloggers, web designers, marketers and individuals who wanted to learn more about social media.
The meetup was called Social Media Talk With Wayne Sutton and as I kept trying to brainstorm how to cover social media in one hour… you can’t! So what I decided to do was try to facilitate a discussion on social media with the attendees along with a little history lesson of who is Wayne Sutton. You can see the presentation below via slideshare.
The attendees had questions on social media such as: What tools to use monitor their brand, how to get started with social media, what tools they should use to track urls and more. Ty along with Lori Lorusso live streamed the entire talk on Ustream.tv and uploaded a clip of the talk to youtube, both you can see below.

Webcam chat at Ustream
A Youtube video clip from Ty’s iPhone 3GS of my Talk on Social Media
I really want to thank Ty and the attendees for having me and from the comments on the meetup.com site it looks like the attendees enjoyed it.
Kimberly – “ Excellent and very informative. Thank you so much! ”
Holly Powell – “ Wayne was very informative. I enjoyed the meeting and look forward to the next event. ”
Chip Hunnicutt – “ Didn’t hear anything groundbreaking (for me anyway) but questions showed different levels of expertise in the audience and potential for future specialized gatherings. Was particularly intrigued by the “startup” weekend concept. ”
Doug Erickson – “ Wayne was a great speaker and knows his “Social Media”
It looks like to have to work on something “groundbreaking” for my next talk but honest feedback is always welcome. Also a big thanks to the great people at the C. W. Worth House who sponsored my stay on Thursday night. The C. W. Worth House is elegant and a must visit if you’re looking for a bed and breakfast in Wilmington.
