How to use QR Codes to check-in with Facebook, Foursquare and Gowalla at the same time.

QR Code check-in signs

As you know I’m a huge advocate of QR Codes. I believe that between QR Codes, RFID tags and NFC (Near Field Communication) technologies, QR Codes will have the largest impact, making it easier for people to check-in using location-based services. At least I’m betting on it. While working on TriOut version two (aka world edition), Lawrence Ingraham and I decided to build a QR Code Reader into the app, but that’s just one part of the QR Code implementation. The second part of incorporating QR Codes with TriOut was adding a custom check-in QR Code generator to the analytics section of TriOut, (aka TriOut For Business).

By adding custom QR Codes to TriOut for Business we allow any verified business to create a check-in QR Code for their location. This not only works for store fronts but for mobile food trucks, conferences, trade shows and locations that may want to direct customers to check into multiple areas inside of their buildings, what we call micro-check-ins. It’s easy to setup and implement as well. First you verify your location on TriOut.

TriOut for Business - Local Advertising and User Engagement

After verifying your location you can log into TriOut for Business and click on the QR Code generator.

TriOut For Business

Next click on the map where you’d like to create the custom location for each QR Code

After you have created your custom check-in QR Code, you can download and print the check-in QR Code for signs, window clings and/or posters. To check-in just have your customers use TriOut to scan the QR Code to check-in. What’s great about using TriOut iPhone app and QR Codes is that it simplifies the check-in process, provides verification/accuracy and can still allow users to check into multiple services at the same time.

By using TriOut version two iPhone app, you’re not limiting your customers to just one location-based platform, as TriOut supports checking into Facebook Places, Foursquare and Gowalla too. Now, not only can you use TriOut and QR Codes to check-in but your customers are not limited to one service and a business can offer check-in specials/deals/coupons and measure the results with one platform.
You can download TriOut free from the iTunes App store here: http://trioutworld.com/app or verify your location here: trioutnc.com/business

If you think NFC, RFID or any other technologies will assist in location-based services going main stream, fill out the location survey here.

3 Ways to check-in to your favorite TV show or movie and how to earn the TRON badge

As I stated in one of my previous blog post called I just checked into your blog, the act of checking in has created a new wave of applications to enable people to check into almost anything. You could always create fake locations in location-based applications and check into miscellaneous items. For example I recall one dinner at SXSW where people where checking into a woman’s bra and another situation where people were checking into a guys pants. That’s all fun for the moment and it was a somewhat ok thing to do when you’re at a conference with friends. But what if you could actually check into your favorite TV Show, movie, video, celebrity or product? Now you can with GetGlue, Miso and newly launched ScreenTribe.

GetGlue:

GetGlue is a leading social network for entertainment, with more than 700,000 users and 10M new unique ratings and check-ins for TV shows, movies, music and books every month. Fans use GetGlue apps to check-in while consuming entertainment to share with friends and to earn exclusive rewards from our partners.

ScreenTribe

ScreenTribe is an application that allows users to experience television and movies in a whole new way. It’s a social service for people who love media. With ScreenTribe, users can see what their friends are watching or share what they’re watching with friends. Every time someone shares what they’re watching, they earn points. The points can then be redeemed later for real life prizes like movie tickets or gift cards.

Each one of the apps allow you to check into your favorite movie or TV show but GetGlue focus extends beyond the screen experience allowing you to check into products and topics. Again, here’s another way to for brands in this case producers to connect with customers using mobile applications. As we have seen with the increase intereste with “social tv” these apps are leading the charge. A few examples are the HBO and GetGlue partnership where if you checked into True Blood, Hung, or Entourage you may receive a GetGlue sticker along with Miso’s Hot Tub Time Machine badge promotion. If you’re thinking no one would check into a TV show or movie take a look at Miso’ trending screenshot below where thousands of people where checking into to various TV shows and games such as Fringe, Glee and the Miami Heat vs Cleveland NBA game.

TRON

I’m sure this weekend all three check-in apps will see a bump do to the new TRON movie. Although TriOut is not a TV/media check-in app we have created a special TRON badge. To collect the TRON badge just mention “TRON” in your check-in Tweet and it will be added to your TriOut awards profile.

Have used GetGlue, Miso or ScreenTribe to check into a TV show or movie before? Do you see the value of using mobile media check-in apps?

Location-Based Marketing/Application Survey

2010 is coming to an end and if one technology predication lived up to the hype it was the adoption and growth of location-based applications. There were check-in specials, swarm badges and various brands starting to take location-based applications main stream.

What will 2011 hold for location-based services? Only time will tell but you can help determine the success of your favorite application and future marketing trends by filling out the location-based marketing / application survey below. Thank you!

I just checked into your blog

Checking in image by Fibrogal6 on Photobucket

At the core of location-based services is the term check-in. The act of checking in using location-based applications can announce to your friends and/or social graph that you are physically present at a location. From there a business/location owner can reward you for visiting the location or by publicly announcing that you’re at a location your friends may join you. The location could instantly turn into a hot spot with more of your friends joining you in a matter of minutes. Now, take the same concept and apply it to websites.

With most static websites there’s very little interaction. You read information and if the information is valuable you may email a link to a friend and the only interaction the website owner may have with you is a cookie or IP address. If you have a blog there are a few ways to interact with your visitors. They can leave a comment, like a post via, Facebook or Disqus and if they share a link via Twitter or other social networking sites you can enable social backtracks to see who they are.

Now playing off the success of location-based apps a new wave of web applications have launched or either added features to enable site visitors to check into your website. Some are calling it participation engine or add game mechanics to your website and others saying turn your visitors into loyal fans. Either way, here are seven web applications to allow your website visitors to check-in.

1. Badgeville

2. OneTrueFan

3. Meebo check-in bar

4. Marginize

5. Bigdoor

6. bunchball

7. Reputely

Bonus: You could create a location for your blog using TriOut World, give it a QR Code and let people scan the QR Code to check-in. For super geeks only. #TriOutShamelessplug

You may be wondering why would anyone want to check into a website? I’m sure the same question was asked four or five years ago about using a mobile device and checking into a businesses. By offering a way for visitors to check-in to your website or blog provides a way for you to reward them with badges, points and can increase time spent along with social sharing. Just like with a few popular location-based applications these platforms are building on the success of adding game mechanics to increase visitor loyalty and engagement. There’s always talk about moving beyond the check-in and rewarding customers, in this case you could reward your visitors if they check into your website or blog.

OneTrueFan - @jodiontheweb - socialwayne.com

I’m currently using OneTrueFan on SocialWayne.com via hat tip to LouisGray. Have you check into a website or blog before? Would you add a check-in bar to your website or do you think the whole idea of checking into a website is lame?

Comic – A simple lesson about location-based applications and privacy from Batman and Robin.

This is too funny especially if you’re a location-based services fan and love a good comic. Batman tells Robin to stop checking into the Batcave on FourWhere. Ironically Fourwhere is an actual product made by the guys at Sysomos.

To the Batcave
To the Batcave | Agent-X Comics

Tip: GreggVM

Although the comic is funny, it is a simple reminder about privacy using location-based applications to check-in such as Foursquare, TriOut, Whrrl, Gowalla, loopt and the many others. Basically don’t check-in at your home base or other places where you don’t want people to find you or a secret place. I think this may be my new meme when speaking about location-based apps and privacy, “Don’t check-in at the Batcave!”

Do you check-in at home using location-based applications?
