First look at the new Yobongo commercial and screenshots to see why it could be the next big thing

yobonogo

I first wrote about Yobongo back in early January when it was seeking more beta testers quietly sparking interest from location-based geeks. A lot has changes since then. Yobongo now has a new logo and is one of the most anticipated startups to open to launch for the general public to test along with being predicted as one of the breakout apps of SXSW 2011 on Quora and other news sites. I’ve been lucky enough to be one of the few East Coast beta testers of Yobongo and I must say the app is great.

Yobongo is founded by Caleb Elston and David Kasper. Caleb is former VP Of Product of Justin.tv and David is programming ninja. Yobongo’s goal is to make “it fun and easy to chat with people nearby on your iPhone“. By creating rooms based on your location, Yobongo will connect users to serendipitous conversations. For example lets say if you’re at a coffee shop, conference or university and launch Yobongo. Based on your location you would be “magically” placed in a room with other Yobongo users to start a conversation about what’s happening. From there you can leave the room and/or join other rooms or send private messages to have a private conversation with someone nearby. Yobongo is a chat app but with a slick and simple interface but has powerful functionality to live up to the hype and be used not only by early adopters but the everyday mobile users.

As Yobongo is prepping for public release they recently recorded a promotional video to show how you can “Yobongo”. Take a look.

There are still a lot of questions surrounding Yobongo as the two cofounder competes with other Location-Based Messaging Apps but between the current users and conversations I’ve seen in Yobongo so far I believe the app is a winner. For instance I’ve seen employees from Twitter, Zynga, foodspotting, groupon, along with bloggers and entrepreneurs such as Om, Robert Scoble, Louis Gray and Andrew Hyde using Yobongo. Just yesterday I had conversation with Boy Genius Report founder Jonathan Geller in Yobongo and conducted a short Yobongo interview as you can see below.

For Yobongo to succeed it will depend on the continued growth of mobile users starting off with the iPhone iOS platform, the social media/word of mouth buzz and early beta testers telling their friends. Yobongo cofounder Caleb Elston says “Yobongo’s goals is to create a stealer communication experience” and so far with Yobongo they have done just that.

Here are few more screenshots of Yobongo.

Yobongo is still in private beta but you can sign up for early beta at Yobongo.com.

After watching Yobongo commercial video, do you think you will use Yobongo?

Updated: Over 222,996 people checked into the Super Bowl with foursquare, GetGlue, Miso, IntoNow & ScreenTribe

Earlier today I wrote a post about how to earn various Super Bowl check in badges with foursquare, Getglue, Miso, IntoNow & ScreenTribe. During the Super Bowl, I checked in using all five apps earned four badges and took a few screenshots to estimate the check-in numbers. Take a look:

Who checked into the super bowl Who checked into the super bowl

Who checked into the super bowl Who checked into the super bowl

Not shown is ScreenTribe but early numbers looks like over 68,000 people checked into the Super Bowl with Foursquare, Getglue, Miso, IntoNow & ScreenTribe. Note, these numbers are just an estimate right after Super Bowl 45 half-time and does not include check-in numbers from the actual Super Bowl game in Texas.

Did you check into Super Bowl 45 and/or earn any new badges?

Update:
From @alexiskold CEO/founder of GetGlue

3 Ways to check-in to your favorite TV show or movie and how to earn the TRON badge

As I stated in one of my previous blog post called I just checked into your blog, the act of checking in has created a new wave of applications to enable people to check into almost anything. You could always create fake locations in location-based applications and check into miscellaneous items. For example I recall one dinner at SXSW where people where checking into a woman’s bra and another situation where people were checking into a guys pants. That’s all fun for the moment and it was a somewhat ok thing to do when you’re at a conference with friends. But what if you could actually check into your favorite TV Show, movie, video, celebrity or product? Now you can with GetGlue, Miso and newly launched ScreenTribe.

GetGlue:

GetGlue is a leading social network for entertainment, with more than 700,000 users and 10M new unique ratings and check-ins for TV shows, movies, music and books every month. Fans use GetGlue apps to check-in while consuming entertainment to share with friends and to earn exclusive rewards from our partners.

ScreenTribe

ScreenTribe is an application that allows users to experience television and movies in a whole new way. It’s a social service for people who love media. With ScreenTribe, users can see what their friends are watching or share what they’re watching with friends. Every time someone shares what they’re watching, they earn points. The points can then be redeemed later for real life prizes like movie tickets or gift cards.

Each one of the apps allow you to check into your favorite movie or TV show but GetGlue focus extends beyond the screen experience allowing you to check into products and topics. Again, here’s another way to for brands in this case producers to connect with customers using mobile applications. As we have seen with the increase intereste with “social tv” these apps are leading the charge. A few examples are the HBO and GetGlue partnership where if you checked into True Blood, Hung, or Entourage you may receive a GetGlue sticker along with Miso’s Hot Tub Time Machine badge promotion. If you’re thinking no one would check into a TV show or movie take a look at Miso’ trending screenshot below where thousands of people where checking into to various TV shows and games such as Fringe, Glee and the Miami Heat vs Cleveland NBA game.

Miso numbers

TRON

I’m sure this weekend all three check-in apps will see a bump do to the new TRON movie. Although TriOut is not a TV/media check-in app we have created a special TRON badge. To collect the TRON badge just mention “TRON” in your check-in Tweet and it will be added to your TriOut awards profile.

Have used GetGlue, Miso or ScreenTribe to check into a TV show or movie before? Do you see the value of using mobile media check-in apps?

The best way to find featured apps from iPad commercials

Earlier this year I wrote a blog post about how to find iPad apps seen in commercials. Since then, I receive tons of Goggle search results from people still trying to find the apps featured in the iPad commercials. The previous post said to look for the the banner ad in iTunes that reads “Apps from iPad TV Ads” that links to this iTunes url: http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewMultiRoom?fcId=376895159. Now it seems as if the Apps from iPad TV Ads section in iTunes have not been updated for a while.

Apple iPad apps tv commercial

Now the best way to find featured apps from iPad commercials is on the iPad. Just launch the “App Store” application on the iPad scroll to the bottom and look in the “Quick Links” section. From there you will see a link that reads, “Apps from iPad TV Ads”. Click on that link and it will take you to the page below.

I would hope Apple continues to update the section in iTunes but it does make perfect sense to have the section in the App Store on the iPad assuming iPad owners are looking for iPad apps seen in Apple ads.

If you have not seen Apple’s latest commercial. Watch the, “the iPad Is Amazing” video below.

What’s your favorite iPad app or iPad commercial?
