The top two reasons to jailbreak an iPhone 4 iOS

Previously I wrote a post about the top 5 reasons to jailbreak the iPhone 4 or any version iPhone but after using a jailbroken iPhone 4 for a few weeks I have two main reasons.

The first is tethering using the MyWi 4.0 iPhone app. MyWi supports both USB and wifi tethering and it’s great. I have a sprint overdrive and since I’ve jailbroken my iPhone 4 I have used it less and less but I’m going to keep it for those just in case moment plus there are areas where Sprint is way better than AT&T. But the USB tethering option using MyWi seems faster, more stable. Also a jailbroken iPhone 4 is a non 3G iPad best friend. Just turn your iPhone to a hotspot, connect your iPad and your surfing away. Note, I kept my unlimited data account with AT&T and this is how tethering with the iPhone is supposed to be.

The second reason/ app is the my3G app. This app allows iPhone users to use FaceTime over 3G. Just the other day I had someone want to FaceTime with me but I was at a store with no wifi. With my3G  app, that wasn’t a problem. We connected and I had a FaceTime chat right in the store.

My bet is it’s more of AT&T and less Apple who disabled these features without being an additional cost like there is now for tethering and not enabling FaceTime over 3G. Regardless if you jailbreak your iPhone, teather and facetime over 3G at your own risk.

What are your top reasons to Jailbreak your iPhone 4?

5 reasons to jailbreak your iPhone 4

Yesterday the the social web was buzzing about a new web based iPhone jailbreak method released by iPhone hacker @comex. The method was simple, didn’t even require a restart and was all done via the mobile browser. To jailbreak your iPhone 4, 3G S, 3G or iPad just point your browser to http://jailbreakme.com or head to http://jailbreakme.modmyi.com as a backup.

Many may be wondering if the iPhone 4 is so great why would you want to jailbreak it. Good question, so here are 4 reasons to jailbreak your iPhone 4.

1. Turn your iPhone into a mobile & USB hotspot device with MyWi 4.0

2. Use FaceTime over 3G. Note that’s @Tiffani, she said this is her after hours home resting look. Thanks for testing FaceTime @Tiffani.

3. Copy files to the iPhone root directory over SSH.

4. Better background applications support with backgrounder cydia app.

5. Unlock your iPhone to use on T-mobile or another GSM carrier.

Warning: Jailbreak at your own risk. Have you jailbroken your iPhone or iPad? If so why or why not?

Apple to fix the iPhone 4 problems to show you have more bars in less places! tip @techmeme

Now this is news. Straight from the press contact. No rumors, guesses or fake emails. Apple has officially announced they will release a software update for the iPhone 4 and the iPhone 3G/ 3Gs. Apple has admitted a problem with the way the iPhone 4 bars drop bars and the formula they used to calculate signal strength on the AT&T network. Also they admitted the signal drops if you hold the iPhone 4 a certain way but also says it worked the the same for previous iPhone models. Here’s an excerpt from the official press release via Apple.

Upon investigation, we were stunned to find that the formula we use to calculate how many bars of signal strength to display is totally wrong. Our formula, in many instances, mistakenly displays 2 more bars than it should for a given signal strength. For example, we sometimes display 4 bars when we should be displaying as few as 2 bars. Users observing a drop of several bars when they grip their iPhone in a certain way are most likely in an area with very weak signal strength, but they don’t know it because we are erroneously displaying 4 or 5 bars. Their big drop in bars is because their high bars were never real in the first place.
To fix this, we are adopting AT&T’s recently recommended formula for calculating how many bars to display for a given signal strength. The real signal strength remains the same, but the iPhone’s bars will report it far more accurately, providing users a much better indication of the reception they will get in a given area. We are also making bars 1, 2 and 3 a bit taller so they will be easier to see.
We will issue a free software update within a few weeks that incorporates the corrected formula. Since this mistake has been present since the original iPhone, this software update will also be available for the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G.
We have gone back to our labs and retested everything, and the results are the same— the iPhone 4’s wireless performance is the best we have ever shipped. For the vast majority of users who have not been troubled by this issue, this software update will only make your bars more accurate. For those who have had concerns, we apologize for any anxiety we may have caused.
As a reminder, if you are not fully satisfied, you can return your undamaged iPhone to any Apple Retail Store or the online Apple Store within 30 days of purchase for a full refund.

Wow! We’ll maybe all the blogging, YouTube videos and fake emails worked. I hope everyone can calm down now and just wait for the iOS 4 software update.

What are your thoughts on the Apple press release? Are you going to return your iPhone 4?

I got 3 words for everyone who is complaining about the iPhone 4 if you own an iPhone 4

Just scan to the front page of Techmeme.com to see some of the news about the iPhone 4, Apple and lawsuits. Despite selling a record number of iPhone 4 mobile phones at launch problems about the iPhone 4 actually started coming in before the launch date ranging from yellow spots to bad cell service. I was one of the brave (some call fools) individuals who stood in line for an iPhone 4 and so far I have noticed the cell service is not as good as it was with the iPhone 3 Gs but it’s not terrible either. I did purchase a non bumper case a few days ago and I have seen no difference in cell phone performance.

Regardless of the iPhone 4 problems or not, the amount of blog post, tweets and news we’re seeing about the iPhone 4 is ridiculous. If there is a real problem with the latest iPhone I’m sure Apple will release a fix soon. In the mean time, there are people starving, an economy in trouble and some people creating some awesome products in the tech world that we could be blogging about and covering instead of complaining about the iPhone 4. Especially if you own an iPhone 4. Create your youtube videos, do your test, tell your friends that you’re having problems with your iPhone 4. But remember it was just last week and you’re under the 14 day window to return your iPhone and if you’re that unhappy about the iPhone 4 take your $199 and buy the HTC EVO or wait for the Droid X or just go back to your iPhone 3Gs if you havn’t sold it.

So please stop complaining about your new iPhone 4 or just Take It Back!
take it back
