Over the years I have never guessed how blogging or having a blog could change or affect my life. Some people blog to share their opinion, some blog because it’s their job and some blog as a hobby and just for fun. I think I’ve all four. Regardless of the reason, I’ve received my share of privileged access to events, established partnerships, launched startups and other opportunities and this blog has been at the core of how I’ve been able to tell my story and share information with the world. Because of that SocialWayne.com has been listed as One of the Top 50 Social Media Blogs Of 2010 via Evan Carmichael, 50 Of The Best Social Media And Technology Blogs In The World via simplyzesty.com and more as you can see on my about page.

Today I’m pleased to announced that SocialWayne.com has been selected as one of the Top20 blogs for Black Enterprise Bloggers Month 2011. I want to say thank you to all of the readers, followers on twitter and others who have stopped by left a comment or share an article you found useful. Thank you Black Enterprise for selecting my blog as well. This is all motivation to continue to provide useful information about technology and more in the future.

At the core of location-based services is the term check-in. The act of checking in using location-based applications can announce to your friends and/or social graph that you are physically present at a location. From there a business/location owner can reward you for visiting the location or by publicly announcing that you’re at a location your friends may join you. The location could instantly turn into a hot spot with more of your friends joining you in a matter of minutes. Now, take the same concept and apply it to websites.

With most static websites there’s very little interaction. You read information and if the information is valuable you may email a link to a friend and the only interaction the website owner may have with you is a cookie or IP address. If you have a blog there are a few ways to interact with your visitors. They can leave a comment, like a post via, Facebook or Disqus and if they share a link via Twitter or other social networking sites you can enable social backtracks to see who they are.

Now playing off the success of location-based apps a new wave of web applications have launched or either added features to enable site visitors to check into your website. Some are calling it participation engine or add game mechanics to your website and others saying turn your visitors into loyal fans. Either way, here are seven web applications to allow your website visitors to check-in.

You may be wondering why would anyone want to check into a website? I’m sure the same question was asked four or five years ago about using a mobile device and checking into a businesses. By offering a way for visitors to check-in to your website or blog provides a way for you to reward them with badges, points and can increase time spent along with social sharing. Just like with a few popular location-based applications these platforms are building on the success of adding game mechanics to increase visitor loyalty and engagement. There’s always talk about moving beyond the check-in and rewarding customers, in this case you could reward your visitors if they check into your website or blog.

Tumblr is down making self-hosted WordPress blogs look great and reminding everyone to backup now

It has been a sad 48 hours for Tumblr. The microblogging/blogging site has been down with no ETA as to when everything will be back to normal. Tumblr users are starting to panic and get frustrated and sharing their frustration on Twitter. I have a tumblr account as well but I’m glad it’s not may main website or I too would be a little upset at this point.

Regardless this is good reminder as I tell clients it’s always better to host your own blog using WordPress vs Tumblr or similar sites. Still if you are using a self-hosted WordPress installation you need to back up your blog for those just in case moments such as a server crash or you need to move your blog to another web host.

To back up your WordPress blog see my post: 3 plugins to backup your WordPress blog. Another option is http://www.backupify.com/ which supports various social web platforms but Tumblr is not one of them.

I wish the Tumblr team luck and I hope they’re able to bring Tumblr back to life soon. In the mean time visit: http://whentumblrisdown.com/

It seems like innovation has hit the technology community again especially in the RSS / blogging / content aggregation sector. Just a few months ago everyone was talking about or how micro-blogging sites such as Twitter would kill blogs. People were saying RSS was too slow and everyone would be using people aggregation to find information in the terms of if something was important, people through social networks such as Facebook & Twitter would tell find information that way instead of reading blogs.

While that may stay true for some, new ways of filtering, finding and reading content have emerged helping users find relevant content to their interest. Let’s take a look.

1. YourVersion – http://www.yourversion.com

YourVersion continuously discovers new and personally relevant web content based on your interests, and lets you easily bookmark and share your discoveries with friends.
YourVersion was recently named DemoPit peoples’ choice winner at TechCrunch50

2. Google Fast Flip – http://fastflip.googlelabs.com

Google Fast Flip is a web application that lets users discover and share news articles. It combines qualities of print and the Web, with the ability to “flip” through pages online as quickly as flipping through a magazine. It also enables users to follow friends and topics, discover new content and create their own custom magazines around searches.

3. LazyFeed – http://www.lazyfeed.com

Lazyfeed is a web service that allows you to subscribe to any topics and get live updates. Just save any topic you are interested in, and forget about it. Lazyfeed will remember and let you know when there’s new content on that topic, just like an instant messenger. Lazyfeed allows you to stay on top of everything you care about, effortlessly.

4. Feedly (Firefox plug-in) – http://www.feedly.com

feedly organizes your favorite sites into a fun, magazine-like start page.

5. Alltop – http://Alltop.com

The purpose of Alltop is to help you answer the question, “What’s happening?” in “all the topics” that interest you.

While Feedly and Alltop have been online a lot longer than LazyFeed, Google Fast Flip and YourVersion, I thought they could be useful to the non-tech readers of SocialWayne.com.

Google Reader is still my preferred choice to read blogs but with features like auto discovery of new content LazyFeed and YourVersion are good tools for bloggers looking to find content or just to keep up with the latest news from the social web / blogosphere.

Has blogging or bloggers gone too commercial?

Ok, this is not your typical blog post or is it? Basically I’m asking one question, has blogging and/or bloggers gone too commercial? Are the days of blogging for the sheer joy of it been replaced with blogging for SEO or ReTweets? Do we blog for affiliate clicks and comments to show off our “social media” blog credibility?

In the beginning bloggers were called something like “pajama bloggers” and the media didn’t take “us” serious but now main stream media and corporations are all trying to blog for profit. I had a conversation last week with an associate about the same topic. We both felt that a lot of bloggers have lost their voice while trying to monetize their blog content and gain traffic.

Either way, I’m rethinking why I blog and who I’m blogging for and of course this is different from corporate blogging. Also I’m not saying their is nothing wrong with trying to monetize your content but just remember why you’re blogging in the first place.
