Case Study: Golden Corral "Cary" launches a location-based check-in iPad contest. Location-based marketing 101

As location-based marketing continues to catch on more companies are coming up with creative ways to attract customers. If you look at maybe 7 out of 10 examples of companies using location-based services I would say that restaurants are leading the way. Reason be that restaurants have a consistent traffic of customers walking through there doors but they also have the challenge gaining new customers and keeping their existing customers therefore making location-based marketing a perfect mix.
Last week we met with MMI Public relations to discuss location-based marketing opportunities for their client Golden Corral Cary, NC. We discussed and demoed TriOut for business and ways for Golden Corral to use social media and other location-based services to make sure they reach their target audience and participation goals. Today MMI announced Golden Corral’s check-in contest and kick off event. Here are the details.
Event:
Want to eat for free? The first 50 people to RSVP will eat for free! RSVP here -> http://gccroundup.eventbrite.com/
Join Golden Corral at the Cary location on May 12 from 6pm – 8pm for some Foursquare, TriOut and Gowalla fun!
Check-in Contest:
- The promotion runs from May 12 – June 16, 2010.
- Please show your phone’s “check in” screen from any of the location based apps at the register to be eligible for a free meal and to be entered into the iPad drawing.
- The Foursquare mayor is eligible to receive one free buffet and drink per day. If the mayor chooses not to dine that day, the free meal is forfeited for the day (no roll over minutes).
- The 16GB Wi-Fi iPad winner will be selected at the end of the promotion period (week of July 12).
You can find Golden Corral Cary social media profiles here:
Twitter: @GC_Cary
Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/GoldenCorralCary
We’re excited to be working with MMI and Golden Corral, Cary and looking forward to seeing everyone at the event.
As location-based marketing is still evolving and others looking to do the same as MMI / Golden Corral Cary take a look at how they launched their contest:
- Announced Contest on Facebook to bring awareness to fan page
- Setup event registration using eventbrite to archive participates
- Tweet contest linking to Facebook page, again bringing awareness to page
- Didn’t limit location-based contest to one service to reach a wider range of users
- Created a branded unique twitter hashtag for the contest. #GCCary
- Being that it’s a location-based contest did market research to reach target audience
What are your thoughts on the contest and would you have done anything different to launch it?

Gowalla releases new iPad app; sometimes bigger does mean better: screenshots

Just in time for the Apple iPad 3G version to be on sale this Friday, Gowalla releases a new version of their popular location-based app.

Notes from @JW blog Gowalla’s Blog post: http://gowalla.com/blog/2010/04/gowalla-for-ipad/
Upon launching Gowalla for iPad, you’ll still see a feed of your friends’ activity, but an additional map view will now show where they are in relation to you. Similarly, you can view popular locations nearby on the updated Spots view, but can also zoom out and move the map to see spots anywhere in the world. Tap on a spot to bring up more information, including photographs taken and comments left there. It’s a fun way to plan a trip or to simply see the world through a friend’s eyes.

————————————————————————————————
Please note that Gowalla for the iPad works great on non the 3G version of the iPad. Also the iPad version looks just as awesome or even better than the iPhone version. Congrats to Josh and the Gowalla team.

I hope we’ll see the other 17+ location-based apps either update or release new versions of their app for the iPad too and soon.
If you have downloaded Gowalla for the iPad what do you like the most about it?
What other location-based app do you think we’ll see release an iPad version next?

What’s the next big thing? – Q & A from #www2010 #fw2010

Today while on the future of social networks panel at www2010 / futureweb 2010 we were asked what’s the next big thing in social networks. The panel was moderated by Fred Stutzman founder of ClaimID, Chris Dibona of Google, Dave Recordon of Facebook, Henry Copland of BlogAds and Zeynep Tufekci of UMBC. The panel was very lively as the discussion was around Facebook’s privacy, managing friends online and can you live without being on Facebook. Along with conversations how you can use social networks for social good.

Interesting enough one of the questions from the audience was, what’s the next big thing or next big social network they should pay attention too. Being that one panel member is from Google, the other from Facebook you can guess what they said, Zeynep joked and said Facebook will take over the web, Henry and I agree on a level that some new soon to be announced platform could be just as popular as Facebook and Google now. When it came to me I repeated the question and stated that I felt like the guy asking the question was trying to verify what he may have read online that a very popular location-based app may be the next big thing. I don’t agree or suggest that any one platform at this current time will be the next big thing therefor I stated the following which was tweeted by @ImagineInternet “An aggregation of social platforms around your home base is going to be the next big thing.” – @waynesutton #fw2010 #www2010″.
In other words I believe moving forward people while start creating there own social networks via their website/blog that will pull in feeds and friends from existing/new social networks around content that they find valuable to their interest.
Do you agree or do you think some new shiny social network will be the next big thing and draw users from Facebook, Twitter or others?
