14 Social Media Professionals to watch in 2010 from the Triangle, NC

Featured North Carolina Social Media

stage

If there’s two things most of my friends and colleagues know about me is that I love living in the Triangle, NC area which includes Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill and that I love technology/gadgets/social media. This area has one of the largest and smartest technology communities in the world and more than often I think is over looked by others.

A few weeks ago I saw a tweet from someone asking about what cities have strong social media communities and they were listing New York, Austin, Miami and the “Valley” which are worthy but don’t forget about the Triangle area too. With more companies starting to implement social media strategies into their marketing efforts or use social media for customer service we have seen an impact from various companies in the area either from creating new positions or launching new products or using social media for community outreach.

Below is a list of social media professionals in the Triangle Area who I believe are ones to watch in 2010.

You can also follow my list of Triangle Social Media professionals on Twitter from my Triangle To Watch list.

Please note, I do know all of the individuals on the list and this not a buddy list or a list by the numbers of their twitter followers or etc. It’s a list of professionals from various companies in the Triangle who I believe will have an impact locally and nationally in the social media space. If you’re on the list, don’t let me down. :)

*Not included in this are my partners/friends from OurHashtag who are very active in the social media scene in the Triangle Area. They include:
Kipp Bodnar
Ryan Boyles
Jeff Cohen

What are your thoughts on the list and/or who did I leave off and why?

    Wayne,

Thanks for posting this. It got me thinking: Why are some cities “geek-hot” but others aren’t? I mean, I get Silicon Valley and RTP. But why Austin? I saw Pittsburgh or Philadelphia listed as another. Why Miami?

What I’m really asking is: How do cities “blow up” with start-ups? Austin and Miami are well-known music and nightlife hotspots (though different types of both). Does that feed into it, or vice versa? I may wind up moving back to the Midwest soon and I want to bring Silicon Valley with me, not leave it behind.

What, no “mommy bloggers” on this list? wink wink. ha ha. Great list, Wayne. And of course you know these people; you know everyone!

    • http://socialwayne.com/ Wayne Sutton

Ilina, ouch. I’m not commenting on that to risk losing my cookies. :)

Matt I wonder the same too as I don’t always think people include the RTP. I would say you have the be the person to build the buzz and become the offline community leader to make it happen. You want to bring the Valley with you, you will with your experience and start to encourage others in your community to move forward on their ideas and network to put your area on the map.

    • http://mattdeboard.net/ Matt

I sure hope it’s that simple. I just feel like there is some tipping point, and I’m curious where that tipping point is.

Like, RTP for example. I lived in eastern NC for 8 years. When I think of RTP I think of, like, high-tech manufacturing, not necessarily social media. It’s bizarre to me that so much is made of the interconnectedness of the web, and yet we still haven’t obviated the desire for physical proximity to people we’re interested in.

It should go without saying that you’d be on the list–if you weren’t the author of it. ;-)

I love that we seem to be reaching a point where it’s no longer a novelty to learn a Triangle business or company is engaging its customers/audience online … now we’re starting to expect it. Everyone is spot on when they say Wayne has been helping to lead the way (while also bringing exposure) to the Triangle social media scene. Thanks for the shout out, Wayne!!

So excited to be included on a list with the people above, but even more honored to actually know (IRL!) most of the tweeps on this list. You all made my 2009, professionally and personally.

Thanks Wayne, for all you do for the Triangle SM community.

Wayne, I left a video reply but just wanted to get it in here, too: One of the reasons the Triangle is becoming known for social media is because of the tireless work you’ve done as our ambassador. Thank you for that, and for including me on this list.

I don’t know whether it’s just me, but I’ve been following social media for a year now, and find 90% of the best Social Media peeps are in The Triangle. I’m from Seattle, how’d you guys do such a good job of taking over how SM works? ;) Nicely done!
